Harry- Adopted by Rhea and Alan
“We initially got Harry as an emergency 2 week foster placement. Harry was a “death row dog” and if it wasn’t for Hounds First and the amazing care he received when first going into the pound, he wouldn’t still be here. We weren’t what people would probably class as ‘typical foster carers’ and that’s the point I’d like to make – whether fostering or adopting, if you can provide a dog with what it needs then you’re ideal. As a young couple, we suited Harry perfectly, and he suited us. He came to us a young, timid lurcher boy and it was clear from the outset that love was a new concept to him.
Almost two years on from that 2 week emergency foster placement, and Harry’s still here, firmly rooted to the sofa that he very cautiously climbed on, the first night he arrived in our care.
After deciding that we wanted to foster Harry for as long as he needed us, until he found his forever home – we made a promise to ourselves and him that we’d do everything we could until he was confident enough to find his forever home, because no dog deserved his happy ending more. That time came, and we decided there was no better forever home for him than ours. Its hard to remember what life was like without Harry, and my partner Alan often jokes that if he’s ever “in the dog house” then that’s a good place to be! We gave him the stability, training, time and patience that he needed, and in return he gave his unconditional love and appreciation for everything in life. Harry has been by our side through an engagement, 2 newly established careers, family illness and a house move. I can’t describe the love I feel when I look into his eyes, even more so knowing that with the help of Hounds First, we brought him this far. Adopting Harry is by far the most rewarding thing we have ever done and I couldn’t love him more – in fact I actually love him more than I like the majority of people!”
